thursday? yeah, thursday

had lunch at the hostel "los tres hermanos" (they ran out of room on the sign so it says "hermano" they couldn't fit the "S") pretty good chicken and rice and a fanta.

surfed by myself (meaning without Pat) for about 2 hours, waves were fun, i got a few good ones. there were a lot of people in the water again today but no one was really catching waves.

got home, killed a scorpion,(it was him or me) ate dinner now a few Tona's and I'm off to bed.

surf,eat,drink,sleep, repeat...

I'll be home in 6 days, I'm getting a little homesick but enjoying myself here.

yesterday and today... (oct 6th and 7th 2009)

surfed yesterday around noon and ran into Shawn from ARK paddleboard's and Chris from Shrimp Creole. that was a nice unexpected meeting. we surfed for about 2 hours or so and the waves were really fun. i got a couple of lefts that lined up all the way down the beach and i saw Chris take off on a bomb of a right, it was pretty sick, especially on that log he rides.

today we went into town to get some cash and had lunch at the local market. pollo a la plancha... so good, $3. then we met out friend J.C. at his little surf shop, and chatted for a bit. we told him and his friend that we were going to Madera to surf, so he decided to shut down the shop (he said he rented 2 boards already so it was a good day) and come surf with us. we decided to take a taxi that one of their friends drives, so we could all go together.

the waves were smaller at first, about waist to chest high with some head high sets. we all got a bunch of fun one's then the waves picked up with the tide and on came the crowd. it went from waist to chest high to chest to overhead in a bout an hour and the crowd grew from 7 to about 30..! i got a good right that connected to the inside so i called it a day. i'll be on it early with the falling tide and nobody out.

Monkeys love rice, they hate cheese.

our friend "J.C." at his surf shop "Nica Water"

after the shot I said "que linda!" they thought i was funny. really good pollo al la plancha (and a coke) for $3 from these ladies

watching the street...

bees, that try to get me everyday. so far i'm winning.

jungle fruit? i tried to dare Pat to eat one.

longest day ever...

so here was our plan...

Get up around 9, and have coffee and breakfast and wait for our amigo Jorvin, along with his wife, to pick us up in a truck we rented, then we would head north about and hour and a half to the Tola region to surf at Playa Colorado with Jeremy, a friend from the states. we would hang by the pool and have lunch then surf some nice head high barreling waves at high tide, then maybe have a drink and head home. Jorvin asked if his wife could come so they could enjoy a day at the beach since he was taking the day off from the taco stand. I thought it was the least we could do since he was to guide us to the beach and drive the mostly dirt roads, which many of were unmarked as well.

here is how it went down...

got up had coffee etc.. as planned. Jorvin was a little late but no big deal, we left about 11:45. his wife decided not to come for whatever reason, which was fine, we would do a guys trip. everything started fine, smooth driving (kind of) no cops, and a quick stop in Rivas for gas.

the drive through Rivas to Tola wasn't bad and we arrived as Hacienda Iguana as planned on time more or less. sweet, so we head to the gate and tell the guard that we were there to visit a friend who was expecting us. he checked the list and says, "no i cant let you in, you aren't on the list..." ok... can you please call the front office and contact Jeremy so that he knows we are here? no. can you let us in to the office? no. can you let us in to look at property? we are very interested in buying a condo.(for $600,000..ha!) no. ok... well, let me just call the office on my Nica cell phone and i will figure this out. check my bag... no phone. shit! i left it at home. Jorvin says, I have a phone, I will cal... wait, shit! no minutes left.

ok, so lets go down the road, and fill up the minutes at the Pulperia (which is like a corner store, which are everywhere and you can get lunch, sodas, snacks etc. and charge your phone card. everyone uses pre-paid phones here.)

we get to the store and ask to buy minutes, and the lady was like sure we can charge your "Claro" (a phone service) minutes, no problem... but, Jorvin has "Movistar" (another company) shit! ok, no phone. the lady let me make a call on her phone for 20 cordoba ($1). i call the desk and explain the situation and ask them to contact Jeremy and to have him call our phone, which still accepts incoming calls even though the minutes are up??!?

so we sit and wait... nothing. more waiting... nothing, no phone call. so another dollar, another call. they say they cant reach him. damnit. so we drive back to the gate to try and convince the guard to no avail. his favorite word was "no". I think he was jealous of my mustache, because his was weak and mine is fuerte!

ok... next idea, we go farther up the road to use the internet, I'll Skype jeremy and we will get it figured out. get to the internet place, people were very nice, but no voice chat on Skype. ok, I'll message him... done, no answer. so i leave a message and tell him to call us if he gets it.

at this point about 3 hours have gone by and we decide to try and find another place to surf. we check the lookout point and the waves look fun so we decide to surf "Santana"

we drive to the entrance, because we were told that you can pay to get in and it's no problem. we get there show ID to the guard and in we go... sweet! that was easy.

we drive down to the office to pay and the lady greets us with a smile and says " welcome. its $15 to get in but you can use the money toward drinks food, beach rentals etc." ok, sounds good $5 each? no problem... "oh, but you cant surf..." what! what the hell do 80% of the people come here to do? eat at your crappy restaurant?! bullshit! so.... on the road again.

we see a gate that was left unlocked, maybe on accident but fuck it, at this point what do we have to lose? we charge down the road, meet a guy working security on the land near the beach who is very nice and shows us a road that we can take to surf. we go, and it works! finally! waves! it's about chest to head high, offshore wind, and warm water. so fun! it reminded me of a secret spot at home that only breaks so often. i caught 15 or so waves in the hour of sunlight that we had left then got out to breathe a sigh of relief and start out trip back.

we watch the sunset and get in the truck to head out. vamos!... stuck in the sand.
shit! shit! what next! 20 minutes of digging and stacking rocks, we get unstuck and are on our way again.

after a 2 hour drive in the dark and rain dodging cows and people on bikes and chickens and horses and giant trucks that dont move over to let you pass, we arrive back in san juan at Jorvin's sisters pizza place and have an ice cold beer and some awesome pizza.

ok, whew! what a day, lets go to the house and call it a night. heading home, smooth sailing... get to the hill near the house and start to head up... start sliding...slide some more. brakes... more sliding..."uh we are going to hit that tree, or that house...." stop. didn't hit the tree or house but do get stuck in the mud again.... 15 minutes of stacking rocks and moving branched and small trees and we get up the hill.

3 beers later and I'm in bed.

...longest day ever for 1 hour of surfing. but, it was worth it.
(p.s. Jeremy did tell the place that we were coming and to make sure that we were let in... they didn't relay the message obviously)

I want one of these trucks...

Finally we surfed. this is a smaller wave, it was waist/chest and so fun!

Sunday

Woke up late today, i slept in a bit til about 9:30.(and found a small crab in the bed when i woke up...) i was up losing at chess last night to Pat for awhile. at least I know how to play now.i plan on surfing and hanging at the beach from about noon 'til whenever. the waves look smaller today but I'm sure it will be fun.

I hope everyone is well at home or wherever they may be. I'd like all of my friends to be here for Sunday funday, but i will be home soon enough.

more updates later...

*update*

I surfed with about 4 guys out around 11:45 and got some really fun waves. afterward i hung out with Jorvin at the taco stand for awhile and had a chicken taco and then another surf before dark. that last session wasn't as fruitful but i got a few waves and that's always a good time.

back at home Pat got bit by a scorpion, but i think it just pinched him and didn't get him with the stinger. he killed another one in the room too! jeez! scorpion attack! he is fine though, nothing to worry about...

I'm waiting on a phone call to see if we can get a boat for tomorrow to meet Jeremy up at Colorado's. it's been "pumping mate" (Australian accent)so hopefully we get to go and i can get barreled!

adios!

saturday so far...

Hi,

today we got out of the beach area and went to...the beach area, in San Juan Del Sur. we decided to take a canopy zip line tour. it only took about 10 minutes from finding the place where you sign up until we were in a tree it seemed. "Da' Flying Frog" is the name of the zip tour. it was pretty fun, i have never done it before, but it felt rushed. we were the only people doing the tour and it was over in about 20 minutes. the guides were pretty cool, and warmed up to us about half way through. when it was over they kind of just went back to doing their thing. I have a few photos, which will be below of Pat on the zip line. I asked, during the tour, "Pat, did you get any photos of me?" and his reply..." oh, I forgot." so... i have proof that i wore a *helmet,(*see photo) but only proof that Pat braved the zip cord.

After the tour I asked about going on a horseback tour to see some Mayan carvings in the mountain. they said yeah no problem you can rent horses and it takes about an hour. so i said "sweet, let's do it." but apparently i have to come back on Monday because it was too late in the day, even though my watch said noon... i guess they were done working for the day. oh well, maybe next week.

i am going to try and catch a few waves before dark. it didn't look so good this morning but seems to have picked up a bit. so we shall see. below along with the zip line photos are some pics from the surf last evening.

enjoy!

*photos are really low quality because the internet is slow here*

friday morning

I am back to feeling like myself again.. finally. got up early did some internet-ing and had some breakfast, now I'm just waiting on Pat to get his ass out of bed... I'm going to the beach at noon with or without him. Jeremy, a friend from home is supposed to meet us at Madera today for a surf, so that will be cool to see a familiar face.

hopefully pat goes with so i can get some photos, I'm not too keen on leaving the camera unattended while I'm down there.(my sandals already got stolen) it's better when we can take turns surfing and shooting.

so, for now, here is a photo of the creature i share my shower with.(it's body is like 3 inches long..ewww) I'm pretty sure Jordan will never come here now...

day 7

day 7 started out a little slow. Pat and I played Monopoly (surfing edition) last night and had a few stiff rum drinks. once i rolled out of bed and had some coffee and a snack i wandered down to the beach.(Pat was still resting up...) The tide was still high and the waves were fun, offshore and about chest high. (again) i also got to meet some of the local wildlife up close and personal. I think I found the only two jellyfish in the water. they tagged me pretty good so i took a break, and walked up the hill from hell to the house to get a different board.

Once back at the beach i surfed a bit longer and better with the new board, there were only 5 people out including me the whole time. i hung out after that with Jorvin at the taco stand and pretty much just chilled at the beach for the remainder of the day.

Pat never made it down while i was there, but went for an evening session when i got back to the house. Im about to cook up some dinner so here are a few pics, until next time...

Adios.

day 6

Hola!

we went into town today to watch a baseball game(san jan del sur). i guess it was the red vs. the blue, because i have no idea which team was which. anyway we got there by the beach shuttle, which, no offence, must have been designed by a woman because it's a ball breaker. talk about a bumpy ride! anyway it was cheap,50 cordoba which is like $2.50.

At the game Pat got a bag of meat with some plantain chips and some sort of cole slaw for like $2 and the beers were about 50 cents each, which is pretty nice.

we watched the game for about 2 hours and I think the blue team won, but who knows, there is no score-board, just a guy writing all of the stats down in a notebbok.

after that we jmped in a taxi for about a dollar back to the center of town and tried to go by our friends' surf shop but it was closed. so we ate at restraunt on the beach. the food kinda sucked, but you can get a half liter of flor de cana a bucket of ice and a bottle of soda (or in our case a bottle of club soda) and some limes for $150 cordoba which is about $7. this was the first bad food ive had here, it was tasty but the shrimp were just way overcooked.

after that we got another taxi back home and surfed for an hour before dark. it was about waist to chest high, clean but closing out a bit. i got 3 pretty fun waves and a few dumpers, but it was fun.

here are some photos... enjoy!

day 5

hi,

had a great day today. i woke up and had some coffee and cookies and yogurt then went down for a surf. the waves were chest high with some bigger sets and only a few people were in the water again. i took a break after that and Pat joined me at the beach. he surfed for a bit while i rested.

I went out again at low tide and got a few fun one's but it was mostly closing out with the tide being so low( i did get a pretty good turn off a nice right that came through though) i had some fish tacos and chilled before heading back to the house to walk the dogs.

after they were walked i went back down to snap a few photos of the sunset and ran into a guy i met last trip named J.C. he opened a surf shop in town, which i plan to visit tomorrow. we are going to get up and catch a ride into town on the shuttle and try and go to a baseball game. i didnt know this but baseball has been in Nicaragua longer than in the US. weird huh? i always thought it was americas past-time, i guess they meant central america.

anyway, enjoy some photos of the moon and sunset, i hope everyone is well back home...

Moonset? now with lunar flare!

day 3 and 4

mellow day yesterday. i surfed for a couple hours with 3 other people out. it was chest to shoulder high and clean. today we went to town to get a few things. we ate lunch at the house then i surfed again with 4 other people for a few hours, chest high plus and offshore. that make 4 days in a row that i surfed... im going for 21. we ate dinner on the beach at the little stand and had some awesome fish tacos.

Ive been taking a few photos with my minolta and lomo cameras,(bothe are 35mm film) so i dont have much to post. i will add them all to my flickr once i get home and get them developed.

im going to try and surf early and bring the camera so ill have some photo updates soon.

i hope all is well in Florida.

Nica day 1 and 2

So, we made it safely to Nicaragua. The flight was good and Marc picked us up from the airport, which saved us $100 on a taxi ride to Madera. it took a bit longer to get to the beach this time because we had to make a few stops so Marc could take care of a few things. It was nice to be able to see a bit more of Managua and we got to get our groceries at a bigger market than last time. $1 for a 6 pack of cervesa Tona by the way, and about $6 for a liter of Flor De Cana rum.)

we got to our house (the Buena Vista Surf Club) just before 5pm and were able to catch a few waves before dark. it was chest to about 2 feet overhead and glassy, no wind at all. we were also the only people in the water. It was a nice way to end the day for sure.

yesterday, day two, we surfed in the morning with Marc and Marielle before they left on their vacation. again it was about chest high with some bigger sets and clean. we came back to the house to get the lowdown on our duties as the dog watchers/house-sitters and had some lunch. we waited out the low tide after that and just got settled at the house and sweated for a few hours. It takes a few days to get used to the heat. then hit the beach at high tide again. it was another fun session, chest to head high and clean.

we also ran into some friends we made last time we were here that run the concession on the beach. I swear i will remember the guys name before we leave. i feel bad but i cant pronounce it so its hard to remember. we will most likely eat lunch down there today and hang out for awhile then surf the incoming tide. the waves look smaller today, about chest high. no wind... (sucks right? ha!)

any-who, stay tuned for more updates and photos. here are some for now...

Chonto

Ive been watching this dvd series called "wholphin" they are basically short films and animations, divided into a series of 6 (i think). I rented them from Netflix but I'm sure you can buy them at your local recordstore/dvd seller-type-place. I have watch a few of the videos on the website, but the DVD's have been the best so far. Check out "chonto" below, It reminds me of a Wes Anderson film in a way. I will post more examples in the future. enjoy.

Them Crooked Vultures

So, this band is pretty much a mystery so far. All I know from what I've read is that the band is made up of Dave Grohl (NIrvana, Foo Fighters) on drums, Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) vocals, and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) Bass.

They are playing some secret shows and only promoting it with the ablove image, which is made up of the logos from each of the members' band.

I dont know, but I think this could be pretty awesome. stay tuned!

ASG,Graveyard,and CKY

I'm leaving a few minutes to go see the nice fella's from ASG, Graveyard and CKY. take a listen below, and I will update after the show!
ASG:

Graveyard:

CKY: (this is a funny video. you can serch for more current stuff, but I just thought this was some weird shit, so here you go...

*Update*

So, we went to the show early as to not miss ASG, which was really the main reason we went to the show. The venue (the Culture Room) added another band that went on first so we arrived in plenty of time. Apperently the opening act paid to get on the tour with CKY (their label did at least) I dont want to say they sucked, but... It just wasnt music that I'm into. Kind of cookie cutter mall metal "punk" that the kids are into these days. Unfortunatly for them I dont think they fit the bill very well, so they didnt get that much of a crowd reaction.

We talked with the guys from ASG for a bit before the show, we have a bunch of mutual friends. They are always cool, and seem into coming down this winter to play a show at the Bubble. Hopefully I can set that up, and everyone will have a blast.

As for the show itself, ASG kicked ass as usual, the SBC (Surf beverage Crew) got a shout-out since we pretty much all showed up to see the show. Even us old-timers got a little rowdy in the pit, we had to show all the tween whipper snappers what was up...

Graveyard is insane too, they are like a Sweedish Led Zeppelin, but better. I saw them play once before with The Sword, and never though I'd get a second chance, since they live in another country. I was super stoked to get that second chance and they were even better this time.

CKY put on a great show, honestly I wasnt expecting much. I was pretty impressed that there are still a lot of fans that come to see them. the energy was good, and they played a bunch of old songs, and a few new ones that were pretty good. I would go see them again for sure. ( I have seen them twice at the Warped tour, on the side stage.)

Thats it, stay tuned.... movie premiere tonight at the Bubble!

Tuesday, May 5, 2009

more music you should have

first up, Thunderlip. I saw them at the Fest in Gainesville Florida two years ago and they kicked ass. I ended up talking with the guys from the band after the show and they were all really cool.

here is a video:

they are friends with ASG, who are also one of the best bands in the world. How they are not as big as Metallica blows me away. Maybe because Metallica are crybabies and ASG are too good for mainstream minds to handle. Brains might explode. Please see this band if they are ever anywhere near your town...

and on a more mellow note. I'm sure most people have heard of the Fleet Foxes by now, but if not... here you go:

and thanks to Liz and Chicken, here are the Heartless Bastards:

oh, and here is B.L.O.R.R (bastard lovechild of rock and roll)
they played at Automatic Slims after a surf video premiere. I was pleasantly surprised at how good these guys were. They put on a great show and were definitly unique. Check them out...

stay tuned, more to come...

Star Slight

I wish At The Drive In were still a band, because I never got to see them live...

anyway for some reason they remind me of my friend Garo's band "Dooms De Pop". they sound nothing alike really, maybe it's the afro's? Or the stage presence?

Which reminds me that, I took some photos of Dooms De Pop a few weeks ago. They really liked what I got and asked me to shoot some photos of the band for a record that they are pressing soon. I'm really excited to do it and Garo (the singer/ lead guitar) has some secret location that he wants to shoot at. I will definitely post photos as soon as I am able to. (probably after the band uses them) here are some in the meantime from the other night at the poorhouse:
Garo also just got a 3,000 sq ft warehouse that he is going to do art shows, bands etc. at in the near future so stay tuned for progress on that, it should be a blast to have a new venue in town!
